Ryan Connon: The Goo Crew

(Aug 7): I usually write about hi-tech stuff, but while I was working at the Lobster Festival I met a couple of young ladies that have quite an interesting job, so I decided to write about them.

I probably wouldn’t have gotten a chance to get to know them except for the fact that they too drive a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser like our k2bh cruiser; so it gave us something in common and we just kept the conversation rolling from there. It turns out we had a lot in common.

These girls work as part of the Twizzler Twist-n-Fill Goo-Patrol, which is part of the Hershey Corporation. During the summer, they go around and promote the new Twizzler “Twist ‘N’ Fill” product. They give out free samples and run contests and stuff like that, but that really isn’t the part of their job that really excites me. What I find interesting is being able to travel and meet new people.

Heather and Katy, the “Twizzler Girls” are spending 15 weeks driving around the northeast on this tour to various festivals, baseball games, and other family vacation spots to promote Twizzlers new product, “Twist ‘N’ Fill”. Along the way and at their various stops they get to meet a very diverse group of people and see a lot of different places. The Goo-Crew has already sweetened up Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Maine, Illinois, and Delaware. After the Lobster Festival and a 4-day break, they will be heading to New Hampshire. Katy did talk about how much she enjoyed her visit to Maine and how “it is like a different country” in that “everyone takes the time to enjoy the simple things in life.” Heather is in college majoring in marketing, so this is a great resume builder for her and Katy just graduated from college with a broadcasting degree. This job allowed them to use their skills.

The chance to see different places as well as getting paid for it… now there is a great job if you ask me. True, it is a lot of traveling, but I feel the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Both girls seemed to enjoy stopping at one place for a day or two and then traveling on to the next. While at the Lobster Festival, Katy met up with her parents and Heather talked about how she had gotten to see hers along the way. As Katy explains, “The best part of traveling is all the people we get to meet and all the fun places we get to visit”.

At the Lobster Festival, the two girls had lobster a few times, got to hang out with us “mainahs” and learn about our way of life. I can not imagine how cool it would be to go all the different places they have been to and have yet to visit.

Many people dream of traveling from place to place to see new sights and meet new people, and this is their job – WOW! “The experience of traveling to a different city every week, meeting tons of new people, and giving out Twizzlers is an opportunity of a lifetime” says Heather when talking about her job. Seconding her thoughts, Katy goes on to talk about how “people tell us all the time how lucky we are. I always say what can be better than twizzlers, parties and driving a goo-mobile?” True there are some disadvantages - long time away from home, the road and motels are their home for the summer, etc. - but there are things in every job that are disadvantages no matter where you are or what you do.

It has been a dream of mine to drive around the country. Having the experiences of seeing new places and meeting new people is just as important as getting an education. It was really exciting to talk to two people who are actually doing that right now.

To sum it all up, I think they have an awesome job – a job a lot of people would probably love to have, myself included.
